Theory of Writing.

Throughout the semester I’ve learnt a lot. That is something pretty much anybody can safely say about any college course, so of course it goes for me as well. At the beginning of the semester, I would quite easily say that I was bad at writing and never enjoyed it. That being said when I was younger, I used to read a lot, but definitely have fallen off that, to the point where I’d avoid reading completely if not absolutely needed.

All of the stories and articles we were assigned to read were surprisingly enjoyable. I never really felt the need to avoid and was actually compelled to keep reading. When I would  have to write anything I’d find it very difficult to start, mostly because I wouldn’t know how to write what was specifically being asked, but we this semester we were given such a diverse array of writing assignments and free write I was able to hone in and get much more comfortable with my writing ability. I learned multitude of writing techniques and skills as being able to complete the course learning outcomes from the different writing assignments in total.

Writing the memo assignment helped to achieve more than just one of the course learning assignments. Mostly to enhance strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment and to engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contacts and beyond because I had to find and read accurate sources, then create a draft with the acquired knowledge and continue editing it until I had a suitable final draft. Another course learning outcome achieved would be to develop in engage in collaborative and social aspects of writing processes, just by the fact that this assignment hinged on the society itself. Most of the other objectives were also reached by writing this in general but not to the extent of the above mentioned.

Throughout writing the Rhetorical analysis of the lab reports I was able to acknowledge my own and others’ range of linguistic differences as resources, and draw on those resources to develop rhetorical sensibility, which is one of the course learning outcomes but not the only one I achieved from writing this. Other ones I achieved were engaging in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond. Using the library database and various sources allowed me to strengthen my source use practices and practice using various library resources, online databases, and the Internet to locate sources appropriate to my writing projects.

There were more than one course learning outcomes that I was able to achieve in the process of writing this technical description. From scouting multiple sources and reading published work I was able strengthen my source practices leading me to also enhance strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment and engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond.

The discussion board assignments and in-class free-writes also push me through learning outcomes. The group works were a great way to analyze the way others wrote and adapt mine accordingly. Overall, there’s been a huge change in me when it comes to the subject of English. What are the qualifications to call oneself a writer, just the ability and pleasure of writing, albeit not professional, but a writer nonetheless. Not everybody can say that just taking a semester course is that they became something. I became a writer.
